Prince of the Asturias & his wife
Alfonso, Prince of Asturias, RE (Alfonso P Cristino Eduardo Francisco Guillermo Carlos Enrique Eugenio Fernando Antonio Venancio de Borb Battenberg; 10 May 1907 6 September 1938), heir apparent to the throne of Spain from 1907 to 1931. Eldest son of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and his wife, Princess Victoria Eugenia (Ena) of Battenberg. Inherited haemophilia from his mother. Renounced his rights to the then-defunct throne to marry a commoner, Edelmira Ignacia Adriana Sampedro-Robato, in Ouchy on 21 June 1933, after which Alfonso took the courtesy title Count of Covadonga. The couple divorced 8 May 1937, with Edelmira keeping the title Countess of Covadonga. A car accident led to Alfonsos early death in 1938, at the age of 31. He crashed into a telephone booth and appeared to have minor injuries but his haemophilia led to fatal internal bleeding. Date: 1933

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Alfonso, Prince of Asturias, is seen with his wife, Edelmira Sampedro-Robato, in the year 1933. Alfonso, the eldest son of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and his wife, Princess Victoria Eugenia of Battenberg, was the heir apparent to the Spanish throne from 1907 to 1931. Tragically, Alfonso inherited haemophilia from his mother, a condition that would ultimately play a significant role in his life. Despite the royal lineage, Alfonso chose to renounce his rights to the throne to marry Edelmira, a commoner, in Ouchy, Switzerland, on 21 June 1933. After their marriage, Alfonso took the courtesy title Count of Covadonga. The couple's union was short-lived, as they divorced on 8 May 1937. Edelmira retained the title Countess of Covadonga. Unfortunately, Alfonso's life was cut tragically short. In 1938, at the age of 31, he was involved in a car accident in which he appeared to have only minor injuries. However, due to his haemophilia, the internal bleeding caused by the accident proved fatal. This poignant photograph captures a moment in time of a young prince and his wife, their love story marked by both joy and heartache. Alfonso's legacy as the heir apparent to the Spanish throne and his tragic end due to his haemophilia continue to be an intriguing part of Spanish royal history.
