EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and captivating portrait, Prince Louis of Battenberg, 1st Marquess of Milford Haven (1854-1921), and his radiant bride, Princess Victoria of Hesse-Darmstadt (1863-1950), gracefully pose for the camera around the time of their marriage in 1884. The young couple, both of noble European lineage, exude an air of refinement and happiness as they look into each other's eyes, a testament to their newfound love and commitment. Prince Louis, the eldest son of Prince Alexander of Hesse and by Rhine and Princess Claudia of Prussia, was a British naval officer who rose to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet. He was created Marquess of Milford Haven in 1887 and later became known as Lord Louis Mountbatten in 1917. Princess Victoria, the eldest daughter of Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse and by Rhine and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Their marriage was a significant union, as their eldest child, Princess Alice (1885-1964), would go on to marry Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark in 1903. Princess Alice was the mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who would later become the consort of Queen Elizabeth II. The couple also had two other children: Queen Louise of Sweden (1889-1965) and Lord Louis Mountbatten (1900-1979). This beautiful portrait captures a moment in history, showcasing the love and connection between Prince Louis and Princess Victoria as they embarked on their journey as husband and wife. The image is a poignant reminder of the rich history and heritage of the European royal families and their enduring legacies.
