EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving depicts the enchanting Pygmy Musk Deer, also known as the Royal Antelope or Neotragus Pygmaeus (Moschus pygmaeus). The image is taken from George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's "The Naturalist's Miscellany," published in 1800. The Pygmy Musk Deer is a tiny, endemic species native to the eastern Himalayas and southern China. With a height of only 15-20 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 5-12 pounds, this diminutive deer is the smallest known antelope in the world. Its coat is a rich, reddish-brown color with white spots and stripes, providing excellent camouflage in its mountainous habitat. The Pygmy Musk Deer is renowned for its musk glands, which are located under its tail. The musk is highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine and was once used as an aphrodisiac. This, unfortunately, led to overhunting and a significant decline in their population. This engraving, produced by skilled artisans of the time, captures the delicate features and intricate patterns of the Pygmy Musk Deer with remarkable accuracy. The artist's attention to detail is evident in the texture of the fur, the shape of the ears, and the expression in the deer's eyes. The Naturalist's Miscellany was a popular publication during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, providing a platform for the dissemination of scientific knowledge and the documentation of natural history. This image of the Pygmy Musk Deer is a testament to the importance of such works in recording the natural world and preserving it for future generations.
