EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts Robert Earl of Kingston, also known as Robert Pierrepoint (1584-1643), a prominent figure in English history as a Royalist soldier. The earl's tragic end came in 1643 near the city of Hull, when he was fatally shot while aboard a pinnace, a small, fast sailing vessel. Born into a noble family, Kingston rose to prominence during the tumultuous period of the English Civil War. He was a staunch supporter of the monarchy and played a significant role in defending Hull against Parliamentary forces. Kingston's loyalty to the crown was unwavering, and he led several successful campaigns against the Roundheads. However, his fortunes took a turn for the worse when he was captured during the Siege of Hull in 1642. Despite being granted a pardon, Kingston was later accused of plotting against the Parliament and was brought before the court. In an unfortunate twist of fate, he was tried and sentenced to death. The print captures the moment of Kingston's final moments as he is fatally shot while attempting to escape from his captors in a pinnace. The image is a poignant reminder of the turbulent times in English history and the sacrifices made by those who fought for their beliefs. Robert Earl of Kingston's legacy continues to be remembered in the annals of English history as a brave and loyal soldier who gave his life in defense of the monarchy. This haunting print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of conflict and political upheaval.
