EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the first three McDonnell F-4K Phantoms, XT858, XT859, and XT860, make their grand entrance at the Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton on 29 April 1968. The Phantoms, which were acquired by the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) of the Royal Navy, were escorted to their new home by two de Havilland DH110 Sea Vixen FAW2s, XN650 and XN690. The McDonnell F-4K Phantom was a twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic fighter-bomber that was widely used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, as well as several other international military forces. This version of the Phantom was specifically modified for the FAA, with the "K" designation indicating the addition of a twin-barrel 20mm ADEN cannon and the ability to carry various types of air-to-ground weapons. The arrival of these Phantoms marked a significant milestone for the FAA, as they were intended to replace the Sea Vixen as the primary fleet defense fighter. The Sea Vixens, represented in this photograph by XN650 and XN690, were also important aircraft in the FAA's history, having served with distinction during the Suez Crisis and the Falklands War. The photograph captures the moment of transfer between generations of aircraft, with the new Phantoms taking their place alongside the venerable Sea Vixens. The scene is further enhanced by the backdrop of RNAS Yeovilton, which has been a center of naval aviation in the United Kingdom since World War II. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of these iconic aircraft and the important role they played in the history of the Royal Navy and the Fleet Air Arm.
