EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures members of the Royal Corps of Transport, 1st Battalion Royal Scots, during the exercise Hardfall in 1980. The soldiers are seen preparing for the harsh Arctic conditions, with one soldier inflating an air-bed, another unpacking his rucksack, and a third constructing a protective snow wall. In the background, a sentry keeps watch, while a gunner of the 32 Guided Weapons Regiment checks his position. The scene also includes soldiers towing a sledge, preparing a meal, and "brewing-up" - making tea or coffee over an open fire. An excavation of a crashed World War II aircraft can be seen in the distance, while a team builds a ferry to cross a river. Arctic tents and a tracked ambulance are also visible, as well as a helicopter and a recovery vehicle. This photograph is part of a larger collection of 145 images of the British Army from 1971 to 1981, showcasing recruit training and exercises in various locations around the world, including Britain, Europe, North America, South East Asia, and the Caribbean. The Royal Corps of Transport was responsible for the transport and supply of equipment and personnel, making their role essential during military operations. This photograph offers a glimpse into the challenging and demanding conditions faced by soldiers during training exercises in the Arctic.
