EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the essence of tradition and camaraderie within the Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) regiment, as depicted by Captain Reed-Scot leading out his draghounds at Shooters Hill, London, around 1911. The RHA, based in Woolwich, was a part of the British Army responsible for operating horse-drawn artillery. However, as shown in this image, military life was not all about war and battlefields. The pack of hounds, consisting of 18 couples, were kept in adjoining kennels, sharing the space with some foxes. Contrary to popular belief, these were not foxhounds but draghounds. Unlike their counterparts bred for fox hunting, draghounds were specifically trained to trail the scent of a wounded or dead animal, dragging a 'drag' or piece of meat behind them to help the hounds pick up the scent. Captain Reed-Scot, a distinguished soldier, is seen here in his military uniform, leading his pack with a confident and authoritative air. The hounds, eager and attentive, follow closely behind, their keen noses focused on the scent. The serene setting of Shooters Hill, with its lush greenery and open spaces, provides a striking backdrop to this scene of military life off the battlefield. This photograph is a testament to the diverse aspects of military life, showcasing the bond between man and beast, the importance of tradition, and the simple joys of nature and sport. It also highlights the role of the RHA in maintaining this unique tradition, demonstrating that the regiment was not just about artillery and warfare but also about camaraderie, discipline, and the love for hunting.
