EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of a pivotal moment in the history of Madras, now Chennai, India. The image shows the damaged Sailing Club building on the beach, scarred by the events of the First World War. The date is September 22, 1914, and the cause of the destruction was none other than the German light cruiser SMS Emden. The SMS Emden, under the command of Kapitan-leutnant Karl von Müller, had been wreaking havoc in the Indian Ocean since the beginning of the war. On this fateful day, the Emden approached the shores of Madras, and in a daring move, opened fire on the unsuspecting Sailing Club. The shell that struck the building caused significant damage to the roof and created a large hole in the brick wall of the interior. The SMS Emden's raid on Madras was a brief but memorable episode in the larger conflict. The German cruiser was eventually sunk in the Battle of the Cocos on November 9, 1914. However, the impact of the attack on the Sailing Club was long-lasting. The building was a beloved institution in Madras, and its destruction was a poignant reminder of the war's reach beyond Europe. Today, the Sailing Club in Chennai continues to thrive, but the memory of the damage inflicted by the SMS Emden remains etched in the city's history. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a time when the tranquil shores of Madras were disrupted by the tumultuous events of the First World War.
