EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment during a lifeboat drill on a British warship during World War I. Dated May 1915, the image shows a group of sailors, dressed in their naval uniforms, diligently hauling a lifeboat onto the deck of the vessel. The boat, which appears to be made of wood, is being pulled by a thick rope, with the sailors working in unison under the guidance of an officer, who stands at the bow of the ship, giving instructions. The officer's white cap and red stripe on his sleeve denote his rank as a senior non-commissioned officer or petty officer. The importance of lifeboat drills during this era cannot be overstated. With the threat of submarine attacks and other maritime hazards looming large, it was essential that every crew member knew how to handle a lifeboat in case of an emergency. The sailors in this photograph are seen wearing lifejackets, which were a relatively new addition to naval life-saving equipment. The inflatable lifejackets, which were not yet in use, would have been bulky and heavy, making the traditional cork lifejackets a more practical option. This photograph, taken by renowned war artist Philip Zec, also known as 'Matania,' offers a glimpse into the daily life of the sailors during wartime. The determination and focus on the faces of the sailors, as they work together to bring the boat aboard, underscores the camaraderie and discipline that were essential to the functioning of a warship during this period. This powerful image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the sailors and the importance of training and preparation in times of conflict.
