EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image, created by renowned Italian artist Fortunio Matania with the assistance of eyewitness accounts, depicts the aftermath of the tragic sinking of the RMS Lusitania on May 7, 1915. The Cunard liner, a symbol of oceanic luxury and transportation, was attacked without warning by a German U-boat during World War I, resulting in the swift demise of the vessel. In the chaotic scene, rescuers in small boats valiantly attempt to pull survivors from the icy waters, as the sinking ship disappears beneath the waves in the distance. The Lusitania, a steam-powered giant of the sea, was carrying over 1,900 passengers and crew, of whom 1,198 tragically lost their lives. The sinking of the Lusitania marked a turning point in the war, heightening tensions between Britain and Germany and contributing to the eventual entry of the United States into the conflict. This poignant illustration serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the enduring power of the sea.
