Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by William McLaren
Sir Gawain takes up the challenge. As instructed by the Green Knight, he swings the battleaxe and cuts off the Green Knights head. The head falls off and rolls towards the banqueting guests. The headless Green Knight steps forward, bleeding profusely, picks up his head by the hair, and rides off. Before he goes he invites Sir Gawain to visit him in a years time, on next New Years Day, and he will receive a return blow

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Gawain, the noble knight of King Arthur's Round Table, boldly accepts the challenge of the mysterious Green Knight. In this moment from William McLaren's painting "Sir Gawain takes up the challenge," the knight kneels before the giant Green Knight, who instructs him to swing the battleaxe and behead him. With a determined gaze, Sir Gawain raises the axe high above his head and brings it down with a mighty swing, decapitating the Green Knight. The shocking sight of the headless giant leaves the banqueting guests in awe, as the head rolls towards them on the tiled floor. Defying the laws of nature, the headless Green Knight steps forward, bleeding profusely, and picks up his head by the hair. Before riding off into the night, he invites Sir Gawain to visit him on the next New Year's Day and receive a return blow. This striking scene, filled with the style and historical accuracy of medieval gothic architecture, is depicted in the intricately detailed glass window of a grand fireplace. The spherical tiled hearth and stained glass window add to the narrative's mystical and otherworldly atmosphere, transporting us back to the Middle Ages and the pages of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a classic English poem of chivalry and the supernatural.
