EDITORS COMMENTS
SMS Wien: Pride of the Austro-Hungarian Navy during World War I This evocative photograph captures the SMS Wien, an Austrian pre-dreadnought battleship and coastal defence ship, in her prime during the early years of the First World War. Named after the capital city of Vienna, the SMS Wien was part of the Monarch class, a formidable fleet that played a significant role in the Austro-Hungarian naval strategy. Launched in 1895, the SMS Wien was a symbol of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's maritime power and military might. With a displacement of over 12,000 tons and armed with a battery of ten 28 cm and twelve 15 cm guns, the battleship was a formidable presence on the Adriatic Sea. As the war progressed, the SMS Wien saw action in several engagements, including the Battle of Otranto in August 1914 and the Battle of Durazzo in November 1916. However, her fate was sealed in December 1917 when she was sunk by Italian torpedo boats in the harbor of Trieste. This photograph, taken circa 1914-1917, captures the SMS Wien in all her glory, a testament to the naval power and determination of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the Great War. The image evokes a sense of history and nostalgia, transporting us back to a time of war and conflict on the high seas.
