Statue of Winston Churchill

A tribute from Sir Winston Churchills constituents. As he celebrated his eighty-fourth birthday with his family at Chartwell, Mr David McFall was putting the finishing touches to the clay model of his statue of the great statesman. Today it stands in Woodford Green but at the time of its unveiling, Woodford residents were unsure about it. McFall defended criticism of the statue with, " I have attempted to portray Sir Winston as a man of intellect. I wasn t making a Toby-jug you know". His aim was to convey the forcefulness and drive in Sir Winston Churchills character, expressing it in the jutting lower lip and the restless pose

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Sir Winston Churchill is seen celebrating his eighty-fourth birthday at his home, Chartwell, surrounded by his loving family. Amidst the joyous occasion, local sculptor David McFall was putting the final touches on a clay model of a statue he had been creating in tribute to the great statesman. The statue, which now stands proudly in Woodford Green, was a source of controversy at the time of its unveiling. Critics questioned the design, with some likening it to a "Toby-jug" rather than an accurate representation of Churchill. Undeterred, McFall defended his work, explaining, "I have attempted to portray Sir Winston as a man of intellect. I wasn't making a Toby-jug, you know." His aim was to convey the forcefulness and drive in Churchill's character, expressing it in the jutting lower lip and the restless pose. The year was 1958, and the historical significance of the statue was not yet fully appreciated by the residents of Woodford. Today, the statue stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of one of Britain's greatest politicians and wartime leaders. McFall's sculpture captures the essence of Churchill's indomitable spirit, a reminder of his unwavering determination and resilience in the face of adversity. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the creative process behind the statue and the dedication of the artist who brought it to life.
