EDITORS COMMENTS
This Tatler cover image from 1915 features a proud Lord Rosebery (Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery) (right), a renowned Prime Minister, statesman, and author, walking with his elated son, the Hon. Neil Primrose (1882-1917), on the morning of Neil's wedding to Lady Victoria Stanley (daughter of the 17th Earl of Derby) in Hyde Park. The joyous occasion took place on April 7, 1915. Neil, who served as a captain in the Royal Buckingham Hussars during the First World War, is depicted in his military uniform, complete with a top hat adorned with his regimental crest. His father, Lord Rosebery, wears a formal morning suit and top hat, reflecting the elegance and sophistication of the era. The wedding was a significant event in British society, with the Stanley and Primrose families being among the most prominent in the land. Neil's military career continued to flourish after his marriage, and he was awarded the Military Cross in 1916 for his bravery in battle. Tragically, Neil's life was cut short when he was killed in action at Gezer during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign on November 7, 1917. He led his squadron against Turkish positions on the Abu Shusheh ridge during the Third Battle of Gaza, ultimately giving his life for his country. This evocative cover image captures a poignant moment in history, encapsulating the spirit of a bygone era and the enduring bond between a father and his son.
