This evocative photograph captures the remnants of Thomas Newcomen's house in Lower Street, Dartmouth, Devon, England. Newcomen (1663-1729), an English blacksmith and inventor, is best known for his invention of the atmospheric engine, a precursor to the steam engine. The engine, which Newcomen developed in 1712, revolutionized mining by providing a more efficient and effective means of pumping water from mines. The house in the photograph, located at the center of Lower Street, was once the residence of this pioneering inventor.
