EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the USS Phoenix (CL-46), an American Brooklyn-class light cruiser, anchored at Portland, Oregon in the summer of 1939. The USS Phoenix, named after the mythological bird that rises from the ashes, was commissioned in 1936 and was part of the United States Atlantic Fleet. At the time of this image, the cruiser was undergoing routine maintenance and training exercises in the Pacific Ocean. The sleek and imposing vessel, adorned with the American flag and various pennants, cuts an impressive figure against the backdrop of the Pacific. The deck is bustling with activity as sailors go about their duties, some working on the ship's machinery, while others engage in drills and inspections. The Phoenix was known for its advanced weaponry, including a main battery of eight 6-inch/53 caliber guns and eight 5-inch/25 caliber anti-aircraft guns, making it a formidable presence on the water. However, this historic ship would not remain in American hands for long. In 1951, the USS Phoenix was decommissioned and sold to Argentina, where it was renamed General Belgrano. The vessel served in the Argentine Navy until its tragic sinking during the Falklands War in 1982. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing the USS Phoenix in its prime, as it prepared for its next mission, little knowing the twists and turns that lay ahead in its storied history.
