EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the thoughtful and introspective gaze of Walter Allner (1909-2006), a renowned graphic and poster designer, as he contemplatively poses in this portrait taken during his time at the prestigious Bauhaus School in Dessau, Germany. Established in 1919, the Bauhaus was a revolutionary institution that aimed to integrate art and technology, and its influential faculty included luminaries such as Joost Schmidt, Paul Klee, and Wassily Kandinsky. Allner, who was born in Dessau, joined the Bauhaus in 1925, initially studying under Schmidt before transitioning to Kandinsky's class in 1926. During his time at the Bauhaus, Allner honed his skills in typography, composition, and color theory, which would later inform his groundbreaking graphic and poster designs. After leaving the Bauhaus in 1927, Allner went on to work as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator in Berlin. In the 1930s, he relocated to Switzerland, where he continued to create striking graphic designs and posters for various clients. Allner's work gained international recognition in the 1940s when he became a co-editor of Graphis Magazine, a leading design publication. He also served as the co-editor of Fortune Magazine (not to be confused with the American business magazine of the same name) in Zurich. This photograph captures a moment in time when Allner, with his keen intellect and artistic vision, was on the cusp of making significant contributions to the world of graphic design. The image serves as a testament to his enduring legacy and the impact of the Bauhaus on the development of modern design.
