Picture shows the Quay Parade of Swansea and on the left the Weaver and Company building
Picture shows the Quay Parade of Swansea and on the left the Weaver and Company building. (now in 2021 this has become a Sainsbury Supermarket)
Standing at six storeys high, 80ft by 40ft by 112ft, with its lower floor cantilevered some 10ft above loading bays, the Weaver & Company Limited building was a flour mill and corn storage facility served by the half-tide basin of the North Dock.
Opened in August 1898, and referred to as the Victoria Flour Mills, the building was designed and built by the French engineer Francois Hennebique in 1897.
It was the first building in Europe which was made from reinforced concrete, or ferro-concrete, a combination of concrete and steel in order to utilise the strengths of each material. (words from https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/story-swanseas-indestructible-concrete-eyesore-15682459)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the Quay Parade of Swansea in 1965, offering a glimpse into the city's rich industrial past. Standing proudly on the left is the iconic Weaver & Company building, which has since transformed into a bustling Sainsbury Supermarket in 2021. The grandeur of this six-storey structure is truly awe-inspiring, with its dimensions measuring an impressive 80ft by 40ft by 112ft. Notably, it was designed and constructed by Francois Hennebique, a renowned French engineer who introduced Europe to reinforced concrete or ferro-concrete - an innovative combination of steel and concrete that maximizes their individual strengths. Originally known as Victoria Flour Mills when it opened its doors in August 1898, this historic building served as a flour mill and corn storage facility connected to the North Dock's half-tide basin. Its lower floor gracefully cantilevered above loading bays by approximately ten feet. As we take in this snapshot from over five decades ago, raindrops gently cascade down against the backdrop of Swansea's skyline. This image transports us to a time long gone but not forgotten – an era when industry thrived along these quaysides. Preserved within this photograph lies both nostalgia and historical significance; it encapsulates Swansea's heritage while reminding us of the remarkable engineering feats that shaped our modern world.
