The Tay Bridge, BR poster, 1957

Poster produced for British Railways (BR) to promote rail travel to and within Scotland. The poster shows a locomotive travelling over the Tay Bridge, with the waters of the Firth of Tay streching out on either side. To produce the preliminary drawings for this painting, the diesel locomotive and train were posed for the artist. Winds of up to 40mph blew through the girders of the Tay Bridge as he sketched the scene. Artwork by Terence Cuneo, son of the artists Cyrus and Nell Cuneo. He studied at the Chelsea and Slade Art Schools and in addition to a long career designing railway posters, he also painted portraits (including royal portraits) and ceremonial and military subjects

National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print of "The Tay Bridge" takes us back to 1957, when British Railways (BR) sought to promote rail travel in Scotland. The poster beautifully captures a locomotive gracefully traversing the iconic Tay Bridge, with the majestic waters of the Firth of Tay stretching out on both sides. To create this masterpiece, artist Terence Cuneo meticulously sketched preliminary drawings by observing a diesel locomotive and train posed specifically for him. However, his artistic process was not without its challenges. As he stood on the bridge's girders, winds reaching up to 40mph whipped through them, adding an element of excitement and danger to his work. Terence Cuneo hailed from a family deeply rooted in artistry; his parents Cyrus and Nell Cuneo were renowned artists themselves. He honed his skills at prestigious institutions such as Chelsea and Slade Art Schools before embarking on a long career designing railway posters. However, his talents extended far beyond that realm - he also painted portraits (including royal ones) as well as ceremonial and military subjects. This remarkable print is not just a testament to Cuneo's skillful brushstrokes but also serves as a nostalgic reminder of an era when rail travel was celebrated and admired throughout Britain. It invites viewers to appreciate the architectural marvels like the Tay Bridge while evoking feelings of wanderlust for Scotland's scenic landscapes waiting to be explored by train.
