1846 Fine Victorian Trilobite lithograph

Homalonotus armatus, Plate IV. From " Organization of the Trilobites" by Hermann Burmeister, appearing in the Ray Society translation of his work published in 1846. The Illustrations and engravings by A. Andorff of Berlin were the finest and most accurate fossil representations of invertebrates up to that time. The work marked a more rigorous approach to the morphology of these groups and a move away from a purely stratiographical approach. The fine lithographic quality of the print owed much to the use of fine Solnhofen limestones that themselves preserved many fine fossils. Fossils such as Archaeopteryx were revealed during quarry work for the raw printing material

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of 19th-century artistry and scientific exploration. The image features a fine Victorian trilobite lithograph, specifically Homalonotus armatus from Plate IV of "Organization of the Trilobites" by Hermann Burmeister. Published in 1846 as part of the Ray Society translation, this work revolutionized the study of invertebrates. The lithograph's exceptional quality can be attributed to the masterful engravings by A. Andorff of Berlin, which were considered the most accurate representations of fossils at that time. What made these prints even more extraordinary was their use of Solnhofen limestones, known for preserving exquisite fossils like Archaeopteryx. Burmeister's approach marked a significant shift towards a more rigorous examination of morphology rather than solely focusing on stratigraphy. This groundbreaking perspective allowed scientists to gain deeper insights into these ancient creatures' physical structures and evolutionary history. Paul D. Stewart's expertly captured photograph not only highlights the intricate details and artistic beauty within this print but also serves as a testament to human curiosity and our constant quest for knowledge about Earth's past inhabitants. In this image, we are transported back in time to witness both scientific advancement and artistic brilliance converge seamlessly on paper—a true testament to humanity's tireless pursuit of understanding our world's rich natural history.
