Antiproton discovery team
Antiproton discovery team. Group portrait of the team that discovered the antiproton in 1955. Seen here from left to right are; Emilio Segre, Clyde Wiegand, Edward Lofgren (leader of another team searching for antiprotons), Owen Chamberlain and Tom Ypsilantis. All were conducting research at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in California, USA. Antiprotons, a type of antimatter, were made by firing protons at a copper target. A few antiprotons were found amongst the various particles created by nuclear collisions. Segre and Chamberlain won the 1959 Nobel prize for physics for the discovery. Photographed in October 1955

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a momentous occasion in scientific history - the Antiproton discovery team. Gathered together in a group portrait, these brilliant minds stand as pioneers of their field, forever immortalized for their groundbreaking achievement. From left to right, we see Emilio Segre, Clyde Wiegand, Edward Lofgren (leader of another team searching for antiprotons), Owen Chamberlain, and Tom Ypsilantis. These distinguished scientists were conducting their research at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in California during the year 1955. Antiprotons, a form of antimatter that defies conventional physics, were brought into existence by firing protons at a copper target. Amongst the myriad particles created by nuclear collisions, this remarkable team managed to uncover a few elusive antiprotons. Their extraordinary accomplishment did not go unnoticed - Segre and Chamberlain went on to receive the prestigious Nobel Prize for Physics in 1959 for this groundbreaking discovery. This photograph serves as an invaluable testament to human ingenuity and perseverance in unraveling the mysteries of our universe. It reminds us of how science knows no bounds when it comes to pushing boundaries and challenging established norms. The Antiproton discovery team's contributions have undoubtedly shaped our understanding of particle physics and continue to inspire future generations of scientists worldwide.
