Egyptian mathematical papyrus, Moscow

Egyptian mathematical papyrus. Known as the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus, this roll of papyrus is from Ancient Egypt and dates from the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. It was purchased in Thebes in the 1890s by Russian Egyptologist Vladimir Golenishchev. The 5.5-metre-long scroll contains 25 mathematical problems, including algebra, arithmetic and geometry. This is problem number 14, for the volume of a frustum, a truncated square pyramid (shown at left). This problem, and others, was deciphered by Soviet orientalist Vasily Vasilievich Struve. Photographed in 1971, in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow
