Eocene forest landscape, artwork C016 / 5349
Eocene forest landscape. Artwork of a forest landscape in the Baltic during the Eocene (56 to 34 million years ago). This region now lies in northern Europe. At top left, an assassin spider (Archaeidae) is about to pounce on a jumping spider (Saltacidae), which in turn is about to jump onto a caddisfly (upper right) that stuck in oozing resin. When fossilised, this resin forms amber. At bottom right is a brown lacewing (Sympherobius siriae). In the background, two primates (Europolemur) on a fallen tree are wary of the giant flightless bird (Gastornis, centre left) that is looking for prey. Near centre, by the stream, is an ancestral horse (Propalaeotherium)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the Eocene period, a lush forest landscape that existed between 56 to 34 million years ago in what is now northern Europe. The artwork beautifully captures the intricate web of life that thrived during this era. At the top left corner, we witness a thrilling moment as an assassin spider from the Archaeidae family prepares to pounce on a jumping spider belonging to the Saltacidae family. Meanwhile, at the upper right corner, a caddisfly finds itself trapped in oozing resin which will eventually solidify into amber. Intriguingly, our attention is drawn towards bottom right where a brown lacewing named Sympherobius siriae gracefully perches. In contrast, center-left reveals an imposing figure - Gastornis, a giant flightless bird on the prowl for its next meal. Nearby sits two primates called Europolemur atop a fallen tree trunk cautiously observing their surroundings. As we explore further into this prehistoric scene, we spot an ancestral horse known as Propalaeotherium by the stream - quenching its thirst amidst this vibrant ecosystem. Richard Bizley's illustration not only showcases these ancient creatures but also highlights their interactions and dependencies within this primeval habitat. It serves as both an educational tool and a reminder of Earth's rich history and biodiversity.
