Konstantin Buteyko, Soviet doctor
Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko (1923-2003), Soviet medical doctor and researcher. In the 1950s, Buteyko, a Ukrainian, developed a theory on the effects of deep breathing (hyperventilation). He believed that diseases such as asthma are caused by a drop in carbon dioxide blood levels brought on by hyperventilation. Buteyko said that shallow breathing restores these levels to normal. He established a laboratory in Siberia, treating over 1000 people in the 1960s, despite attempted Soviet suppression. The Buteyko method is controversial; sceptics say it works because of a psychological (placebo) effect. Photographed in 1987

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned Soviet doctor, Konstantin Buteyko, in 1987. A pioneer in his field, Buteyko dedicated his life to researching the effects of deep breathing on various diseases, particularly asthma. Born in Ukraine in 1923, he developed a theory that linked hyperventilation and low carbon dioxide levels to respiratory disorders. Despite facing suppression from the Soviet Union, Buteyko fearlessly established a laboratory in Siberia during the 1960s. There, he treated over a thousand patients using his controversial method known as the Buteyko technique. This alternative therapy aimed to restore normal carbon dioxide levels through shallow breathing. In this thought-provoking image, we see Dr. Buteyko engrossed in conversation on an old telephone – a symbol of communication technology at that time. His dedication to improving respiratory health is evident as he discusses treatment options with someone on the other end of the line. Dr. Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko's contributions to medicine and research have left an indelible mark on twentieth-century healthcare history. While skeptics argue that his method may work due to psychological factors or placebo effect, there is no denying his impact on pulmonary physiology. This powerful photograph not only pays tribute to Dr. Buteyko but also serves as a reminder of how innovative ideas can emerge even under challenging circumstances like those faced by this brilliant Ukrainian scientist within Soviet Russia's clinical landscape.
