Otto Schmidt, Soviet Arctic explorer
Otto Yulievich Schmidt (left, 1891-1956), Soviet Arctic explorer and geophysicist, greeting one of the rescue pilots (right) during the Chelyuskin expedition to the Arctic. The steamship Chelyuskin left port in 1933 on a voyage of exploration in the Arctic. Schmidt, a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and a famous Arctic explorer, was one of the expedition leaders. The ship got stuck in the Arctic pack ice and eventually sunk in early 1934. The crew had to abandon ship and be rescued by aircraft. The rescue pilots were among the first to receive the award of Hero of the Soviet Union for their part in this dramatic rescue
