EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's impression of the magnificent Woolly rhinoceros, a majestic creature that roamed the Earth during the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. Existing from 1.8 million years ago until about 10,000 years ago, this extinct mammal was well-suited to endure the harsh cold conditions of the tundra in northern Eurasia. With its thick and shaggy fur, small ears, short legs, and massive body structure designed to conserve heat loss, the Woolly rhinoceros was a true marvel of evolution. Standing up to 2 meters tall at the shoulder and measuring around 3.5 meters in length, it possessed two impressive horns - one shorter horn near its nose and another longer front horn reaching up to a meter long. The significance of this ancient species is further emphasized by cave paintings created by early humans approximately 30,000 years ago. These remarkable artworks depict not only woolly rhinoceros but also other large mammals that coexisted with them during that time. As we gaze upon this artful illustration capturing the essence of Coelodonta antiquitatis (scientific name for Woolly rhinoceros), we are reminded of our planet's rich history and diverse wildlife heritage. This image serves as a testament to both scientific exploration into prehistoric life forms and humanity's enduring fascination with these extraordinary creatures from our past.
