US-SATURN. This photo released by Nasa and the Hubble Heritage Team 07 June
This photo released by Nasa and the Hubble Heritage Team 07 June, 2001, shows a series of images of Saturn taken by the Hubble space Telescope from 1996 to 2000 showing the planets rings as they move from autumn towards winter in its Northern Hemisphere. Saturns equator is tilted relative to its orbit by 27 degrees, very similar to the 23-degree tilt of the Earth. The first image in this sequence (lower-L) was taken after the autumnal equinox in Saturns Northern Hemisphere. By the final image in the sequence (upper-R), the tilt is nearing the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. Astronomers are studying this set of images to investigate the detailed variations in the color and brightness of the rings. The rings have a thickness of only about 30 feet (10 meters). The rings, as shown here, have a slight pale reddish color due to the presence of organic material mixed with the water ice. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print released by NASA and the Hubble Heritage Team on June 7,2001, offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the enigmatic beauty of Saturn. Captured over a span of four years from 1996 to 2000, this series of images showcases the planet's iconic rings as they transition from autumn towards winter in its Northern Hemisphere. With Saturn's equator tilted at an angle of 27 degrees relative to its orbit, mirroring Earth's own tilt of 23 degrees, these photographs provide astronomers with invaluable insights into the intricate variations in color and brightness exhibited by the rings. The sequence begins with an image taken after Saturn's autumnal equinox in its Northern Hemisphere (lower-left), while culminating with a photograph nearing the winter solstice (upper-right). The delicate rings, astonishingly thin at just about 30 feet or 10 meters thick, display a subtle pale reddish hue owing to organic material intermingled with water ice. As scientists delve deeper into their analysis of this remarkable set of images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, they hope to unravel more mysteries surrounding Saturn's magnificent ring system. This awe-inspiring snapshot serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about our celestial neighbors and reminds us once again that there is so much left for us to explore beyond our own blue planet.
