Oil on canvas by Johan Nepomuk SchAonberg, 1902.
General (later Field Marshal) Lord Kitchener (1850-1916) was one of the leading celebrities of the Boer War (1899-1902) and it was his public reputation that made him ideal for a recruiting poster on the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.
Johann SchAonberg was an artist-reporter in South Africa for the British illustrated newspaper A The SphereA. Posing as a neutral German reporter (he was born in Austria) he worked behind Boer lines and the drawings he sent back to London provided a unique perspective for British readers. EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print captures the historic moment of General Lord Kitchener saluting as he rides past Boer leaders, who respectfully stand and doff their hats. Painted by Johann Nepomuk Schonberg in 1902, this oil on canvas artwork is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. General Lord Kitchener was a prominent figure during the Boer War (1899-1902) and gained significant public recognition. His fame made him an ideal choice for a recruiting poster when the First World War broke out in 1914. Johann Schonberg, an artist-reporter for British illustrated newspaper The Sphere, played a unique role during his time in South Africa. Posing as a neutral German reporter (although he was born in Austria), he worked behind enemy lines to provide exclusive drawings that offered British readers a fresh perspective on the conflict. However, his cover was blown when The Sphere sent him a telegram instructing him to remain in London. As a result, Schonberg swiftly returned to England. This remarkable piece of art not only commemorates an important historical event but also highlights the talent and bravery of artists like Johann Schonberg, who risked their lives to document war from different perspectives. It serves as a testament to the power of art as both documentation and propaganda during times of conflict.
