The Wreck of the Britannia, 1810 (watercolour, graphite, pen, ink)
7341820 The Wreck of the Britannia, 1810 (watercolour, graphite, pen, ink) by Pocock, Nicholas (1741-1821); 25.3x39.7 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Nicholas Pocock
Illustration to Falconer's The Shipwreck (1811 ed. f. p.127)'. The ninth of a series of ten, of which the collection holds nine (PAF5913-21). The printed description of the plate based on it, probably written by Pocock, reads: Hove to with her head to the Westward, and having struck, [the ship] is lifted by the Surge with her Back broken, her Bowsprit and Masts all gone, except the Main-mast; to which, and the Main-yard, are seen clinging the remainder of the crew. The place represented in this image is Cape Colonna (Sunion), Greece, the site of Falconer's own experience of shipwreck in 1749, with the ancient temple of Poseidon shown on the summit to the right. Lord Byron, when he later visited the temple, would certainly have recollected Falconer's poem, of which he and many others of the Romantic period were admirers. Signed by the artist and dated, lower left. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour, graphite, pen, and ink print by Nicholas Pocock captures the dramatic scene of The Wreck of the 'Britannia' in 1810. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke, from the broken ship with its missing masts and bowsprit to the crew clinging desperately to the main-mast. This illustration was created as part of a series for Falconer's 'The Shipwreck', adding a visual element to the gripping tale.
Set against the backdrop of Cape Colonna (Sunion), Greece, this image brings to life Falconer's own experience of shipwreck at this very location in 1749. The ancient temple of Poseidon looms on the summit to the right, adding an extra layer of historical significance to this artwork.
Nicholas Pocock's skillful rendering not only conveys the chaos and devastation of a shipwreck but also pays homage to Lord Byron and other admirers of Falconer's poem during the Romantic period. This print serves as a powerful reminder of nature's unforgiving power and humanity's resilience in times of crisis.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this piece is a testament to Pocock's talent as an artist and his ability to capture both beauty and tragedy on paper.
