EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph titled "Past & Present: Fire-Extinction" takes us on a journey through time, showcasing the evolution of fire-extinguishing technology. The image features two contrasting scenes - one depicting a manual fire engine from the 18th century and the other showing a modern motor "Fire-Suds" machine.
In the first scene, we see men operating pumps and treadle boards to extinguish flames with water, highlighting the ingenuity of Richard Newsham's patented water engine from London in the early 1700s. This historical depiction gives us a glimpse into how fires were tackled centuries ago, relying on manpower and basic machinery.
On the other hand, the second scene showcases a cutting-edge motorized machine designed specifically for combating burning petrol, oil, tar, or other flammable liquids. This innovative appliance utilizes acid and alkali solutions to produce froth that effectively smothers flames, demonstrating advancements in fire-extinguishing technology over time.
Through this striking juxtaposition of past and present firefighting methods, this print not only educates viewers about historical developments but also celebrates progress in science and technology. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in ensuring public safety and protecting lives and property from devastating fires.
