Watercolour by Richard Simkin, 1900 circa.
Lieutenant General the Earl of Wellington, commanding a combined British, Spanish and Portuguese force, defeated Marshal MarmontAs French army at Salamanca on 22 July 1812. The victory was one of WellingtonAs finest and proved that he was more than just a good defensive general after he had quickly seized on an opportunity to attack MarmontAs divisions when they became too extended after marching across his front.
The battle shook French confidence to such a degree that they never really regained the initiative during the remainder of the Peninsular War (1808-1814). Wellingtons army of 48, 600 suffered 5, 200 casualties, but inflicted around 14, 000 casualties on Marmonts 50, 000-strong army.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating watercolor print by Richard Simkin, created around 1900. This artwork depicts the historic clash between Lieutenant General the Earl of Wellington's combined British, Spanish, and Portuguese force and Marshal Marmont's French army. Wellington's victory at Salamanca was a defining moment in his military career, showcasing his strategic brilliance beyond just defensive tactics. The opportunity arose when Marmont's divisions became vulnerable after marching across Wellington's front lines. Seizing this advantage with lightning speed, Wellington launched an attack that shattered French confidence and turned the tide of the Peninsular War. The battle was fierce and intense, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. Wellington's army suffered approximately 5,200 losses while inflicting around 14,000 casualties upon Marmont's larger force of 50,000 soldiers. Simkin skillfully captures the chaos and drama of this pivotal engagement through his masterful use of watercolors. The vibrant hues bring to life the smoke-filled battlefield as well as the determination etched on the faces of soldiers from all nations involved. This historical artwork serves as a testament to Wellington's exceptional leadership skills and highlights how one decisive victory can shape an entire war campaign. Preserved by London’s National Army Museum for over a century now, this print continues to inspire awe for its depiction of bravery amidst adversity during one of Europe’s most tumultuous periods.
