Prince Arthur (1850-1942) was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. HeAwas named after one of his godfathers, Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, on whose 81st birthday he was born.
In 1879, Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. She was the daughter of Prince Friedrich Karl and a great-niece of Kaiser Wilhelm I (another of Arthurs godfathers). To mark the occasion, he was appointed colonel of the 3rd Zieten Hussars, a regiment of the Imperial German Army. From 1904, he served as its colonel-in-chief and in 1906 he was appointed a field marshal in the German Army.
Although purely ceremonial, these appointments reflected his familyAs close German ties. His mother, Queen Victoria, was the last British monarch from the House of Hanover. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of boots worn by HRH The Duke of Connaught, pre-1914. These boots belonged to Prince Arthur, the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Named after Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, he was born on his godfather's 81st birthday. In 1879, Prince Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, who had ties to Kaiser Wilhelm I. To commemorate their union, he was appointed colonel of the prestigious 3rd Zieten Hussars regiment in the Imperial German Army. His close German connections were further highlighted when he became its colonel-in-chief in 1904 and a field marshal in the German Army in 1906. Although these appointments held no practical significance beyond ceremonial duties, they symbolized the strong familial bonds between Britain and Germany during that era. Queen Victoria herself was from the House of Hanover, making her the last British monarch with such lineage. Additionally, through his father Prince Albert's titles as Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Prince Arthur maintained significant ties to Germany. This historical artifact is now housed at London's National Army Museum as part of their collection. It serves as a reminder not only of royal fashion but also highlights an intriguing period where political alliances intertwined with personal relationships on both sides of Europe.
