The Death of Duke Humphrey, 1447 (litho)

8661391 The Death of Duke Humphrey, 1447 (litho) by Norbury, Richard (1815-86); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Death of Duke Humphrey, 1447. Following the truce with France which necessitated the evacuation of French fortresses in Maine and elsewhere, a violent outcry arose against Suffolk and Somerset. The English refused to accept defeat and resented bitterly the terms of the truce. Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, therefore took the lead in an agitation. He was arrested by order of the Queen immediately on his arrival at Bury St Edmunds to attend the Parliament, and his death on 23 February 1447, after only five days imprisonment, was attributed to foul play.
