EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the title page from "La civilite puerile a laquelle avons adiouste la discipline et instruction des enfans. Aussi La doctrine et enseignemens du pere de famille A la jeunesse" by Desiderius Erasmus, printed in 1582. The French School of the 16th century beautifully crafted this piece, measuring at 15.6x9.2 cm and currently held in a private collection. The title page is an adaptation of Erasmus' "De civilitate morum puerorum libellus" translated by Jean Louveau. It features an intricate design with elements such as a cartouche and various fonts that exemplify the humanist movement during the Northern Renaissance period. Of particular interest is the use of moveable type, specifically type B1 cut by Philippe Danfrie, which was highly recommended by the printer in the preface. The text emphasizes that not only will young readers benefit from the book's content but also from its letters, as they are considered proper for their language. This rare and remarkable print represents a significant contribution to both literature and typography during this era. Its inclusion of good faith and civility aligns with Erasmus' teachings on moral conduct for children. Bridgeman Images has expertly captured this frontispiece photographically, allowing viewers to appreciate its historical significance while highlighting its artistic beauty. This image serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of humanism and Renaissance ideals within society today.
