The Belgian countess Louise de Mercy-Argenteau (1837-1890) contributed to the spread of Russian music in Europe, organizing concerts in Belgium, supporting and publicizing the composers of the " group of Five". An excellent pianist herself, she was close to the composer Cesar Cui, to whom she devoted a book. Cui, who often stayed in his castle not far from Liege, dedicated his opera Le Filibustier to him. It is at Cuis request that Repine creates, a few days before the Countesss death, this portrait in which he represents her lying on a sofa, without strength, her face soft and resigned.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite oil on canvas painting titled "Louise de Riquet, Countess of Mercy-Argenteau" by Ilya Efimovich Repin. Created in 1890 and currently housed at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia, this artwork beautifully captures the essence of Belgian countess Louise de Mercy-Argenteau. Known for her significant contributions to the promotion of Russian music in Europe, Countess Louise organized concerts in Belgium and supported composers from the renowned "Group of Five". A talented pianist herself, she had a close relationship with composer Cesar Cui and even dedicated a book to him. In fact, Cui composed his opera Le Filibustier as a tribute to her. Repin was commissioned by Cui to paint this portrait just days before Countess Louise's passing. The painting depicts her lying on a sofa with an air of resignation and softness on her face. It conveys her weakened state during those final moments. The photograph itself is expertly captured by Sylvain Collet and offers viewers a glimpse into both artistry and history. It encapsulates not only the tiredness that comes with weariness but also highlights elements such as furniture design and costume attire prevalent during that era. Through this image, we are reminded of Countess Louise's influential role within European society as well as her immense contribution to promoting Russian music across borders.
