EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Short-tailed Coatee worn by Lieutenant Henry Anderson, a brave officer of the 2nd Battalion 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment during the Waterloo Campaign in 1815. The vibrant scarlet and green fabric adorned with gilt buttons exudes a sense of regality and military prowess. The image transports us back to a time when the 69th Regiment faced immense challenges on the battlefield. At Quatre Bras, they suffered heavy losses at the hands of French Cavalry, losing one of their colors in battle. Undeterred, they marched on to Waterloo where they found themselves positioned near Hougoumont amidst relentless artillery fire and further cavalry attacks. Despite these adversities, Lieutenant Anderson and his fellow soldiers played an instrumental role in repulsing the formidable French Imperial Guard during the climactic moments of this historic battle. However, victory came at a cost as Anderson himself was wounded in action. This photograph not only captures Lt Henry Anderson's remarkable bravery but also serves as a testament to all those who fought valiantly under adverse circumstances during this pivotal moment in history. It stands as a reminder of their sacrifice and unwavering commitment to defending their country. Displayed proudly at London's National Army Museum, this image offers us a glimpse into an era defined by heroism and honor on the battlefield.
