The sitter was in the Centurion on Anson's voyage around the world, 1739-1744. In March 1745 he was promoted to commander and in August was made post-captain in a French prize frigate called the Grand Turk, 22 guns. In 1748 he was with Admiral Hawke in the Bay of Biscay in command of the Tavistock, 30 guns, and in 1749 commanded the guardship Anson, 64 guns, at Portsmouth. This was his last service afloat and in 1754 he became one of the four Captains of Greenwich Hospital.
