EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait captures the essence of Robert Blake, a fearless and influential figure in British history. Painted in the 17th century by an unknown artist from the British School, this oil on canvas masterpiece showcases General at Sea Robert Blake in all his glory.
Standing tall and proud, Blake is depicted wearing a breastplate and leather coat, exuding strength and determination. A key player in the Civil War against Charles I, he defended strategic locations like Lyme Regis and Taunton for the Parliamentary cause.
Appointed as a general at sea in 1649, Blake led successful campaigns against Prince Rupert's squadron and later commanded the fleet during intense battles with the Dutch. His most notable victory came in 1656 when he blockaded Cadiz and decimated the Spanish fleet at Santa Cruz.
Tragically, Blake met his end on a return voyage but left behind a legacy of bravery and leadership that continues to inspire generations. This portrait serves as a timeless tribute to his remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication to serving his country.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this artwork is not just a visual representation of history but also a poignant reminder of one man's extraordinary contributions to shaping Britain's naval prowess.
