Osiris was worshipped in many foms, one being that of Apis, the sacred bull, under the name Apis-Osiris. A bull having certain special markings was brought to be a reincarnation of the god Osiris, and was brought with great rejoicing to Memphis, regarded as a god, and was the centre of an elaborate cult. Shortly after the defeat of an expedition sent by Cambyses into Ethiopia Apis was found and brought to Memphis. The Persian conqueror, who thought the rejoicing was partly held in satisfaction at his misfortunes, stopped the festival and with his own hand slew the sacred bull.
