Traditional Japanese Woodblock print of Love and the Moon

" Utagawa Toyokuni (1769, Edo - February 24, 1825, Edo) was born as the son of a puppet maker. He learned printmaking as a student of Toyoharu. At the beginning of his career he concentrated on bijin-ga - images of beautiful women. Toyokunis success and fame came when he started making yakusha-e or actor portraits and actor scenes. This image dated 1848 is Act1, scene 4 of Yumemono gatari and was published by Minatoya Kohe. It shows a moonlit scene with Fireflys in the sky. The lover in the boat and two figures rowing towards it, one man holds up his hand and forms part of my own private collection of original woodblock prints. This image dated 1848 is Act1, scene 4 of Yumemono gatari and was published by Minatoya Kohe. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a traditional Japanese woodblock print titled "Love and the Moon" by Utagawa Toyokuni. Born into a family of puppet makers, Toyokuni became an accomplished printmaker under the guidance of his mentor, Toyoharu. Initially focusing on bijin-ga or images of beautiful women, Toyokuni's career skyrocketed when he delved into yakusha-e or actor portraits and scenes. Dated 1848, this particular image represents Act 1, scene 4 of Yumemono gatari and was published by Minatoya Kohe. Set against a moonlit backdrop with fireflies illuminating the sky, it depicts a serene yet romantic atmosphere. In the foreground lies a lover in a boat eagerly awaiting two figures rowing towards him. One man raises his hand in what appears to be an inviting gesture. As an avid collector of original woodblock prints myself, this exquisite piece holds a special place in my private collection. The intricate details and masterful technique employed by Toyokuni truly bring this enchanting scene to life. It serves as both a testament to Japan's rich artistic heritage and an invitation for viewers to immerse themselves in its timeless beauty.
