EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage Japanese woodblock print transports us to a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the intricate details of a traditional house interior. Created by the talented Yamazaki Toshinobu, this Oban woodblock print showcases his artistic prowess and storytelling abilities. Born in 1857 to humble beginnings as the son of a barber, Toshinobu's talent propelled him to create thirty woodblock prints depicting the historic 1877 Satsuma Rebellion. Later settling in Osaka, he continued his artistic journey as an illustrator for novels and newspapers while producing more stunning woodblock prints. In this particular artwork, we are drawn to the vibrant colors that bring life to every element within the scene. A group of women and men gather around various objects, their elegant kimonos adding splashes of color against an ornate screen partition. An oil lamp illuminates their faces as they engage in conversation or enjoy a meal together using chopsticks. The presence of a geisha adds an air of beauty and gracefulness, while a dog rests peacefully nearby. The room is adorned with exquisite furniture including vases and candlestick holders. Through this image, we discover not only Japan's rich cultural heritage but also its domestic life during the 19th century. Bernard Allum has captured this remarkable piece through photography, allowing us to appreciate its intricate details even from afar. It serves as both an homage to traditional Japanese artistry and an invitation for viewers worldwide to immerse themselves in its timeless
