Abo, from an original sketch, 1854. Creator: Unknown

Abo, from an original sketch, 1854. Abo [now Turku] is the most ancient city in Finland; its history being coeval with the reign of Eric the Saint, that is from about 1150 to 1160, the period at which Christianity was first introduced into that wild region. The Castle is as ancient as the town, and can boast of having more than once arrested the onward march of the Russian armies...its University, founded by Gustavus Adolphus, in 1630, has been removed to Helsingfors, the Russian capital of Finland...A recent letter from Stockholm states that no vessel of any kind or nation is allowed to enter Abo, the authorities being afraid of the arrival of intelligence injurious to Russian interests'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
Abo, Finland: An Ancient City Guarding Its History and Culture, 1854 This evocative black and white sketch, titled 'Abo,' captures the timeless beauty and rich history of the ancient Finnish city now known as Turku. Dating back to approximately 1150-1160 AD, Abo is Finland's oldest city, with a history coeval with the reign of Eric the Saint and the introduction of Christianity in the region. The city's castle, as ancient as the town itself, stands proudly in the foreground, having once successfully defended against the onward march of Russian armies. The castle's university, founded by Gustavus Adolphus in 1630, was later relocated to Helsingfors, now the Russian capital of Finland. The serene Aura River, winding through the cityscape, adds to the picturesque scene. However, the peacefulness of the image belies the political tensions of the time. A recent letter from Stockholm reported that no vessel was allowed to enter Abo, as the authorities feared the arrival of information detrimental to Russian interests during the Crimean War. This sketch, published in the 'Illustrated London News' in 1854, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the architectural grandeur and historical significance of Abo. The intricate details of the buildings, the bridge, and the cathedral transport us back to a time when the city was a vital cultural and religious hub in the heart of Finland.
