EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century print showcases Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of King Henry VIII of England. In this colorised black and white portrait, we catch a glimpse of Anne's regal presence and exquisite fashion sense. As a German Protestant princess, she was married to Henry in 1540 for political reasons upon the advice of his Chancellor, Thomas Cromwell. The renowned artist Hans Holbein beautifully captured Anne's likeness on canvas, which pleased Henry enough to proceed with the marriage. However, when they met face-to-face, he discovered that her physical appearance did not match his expectations. Consequently, their union was annulled after merely six months. This image offers us a fascinating insight into the complexities surrounding royal marriages during this era. It highlights how appearances played a significant role in shaping alliances between countries and monarchies. Despite its short duration and lack of romantic connection between them, Anne's position as queen consort left an indelible mark on history. As we admire this remarkable print from The Print Collector collection - carefully colorised to bring it to life - we are transported back to the vibrant world of Tudor England. It serves as a reminder that even within powerful dynasties like the Tudors', personal desires often took second place to political considerations when it came to matters of love and marriage.
