Backrest of a Litter, 900-1470. Creator: Unknown

Backrest of a Litter, 900-1470. This rare, dramatic object served as the back support of a litter carried by human porters, a mode of transport reserved for honored members of many societies without draft animals or wheeled vehicles. The simple, bold figures-perhaps a Chimu lord and four officials-all wear wide collars, tunics, and crescent headdresses that are either brightly painted or covered with golden but now-corroded sheet metal. The holes at the bottom probably served as lashing points for a beam that supported the litters seat. Susan E. Bergh, PhD, Associate Curator, Art of the Ancient Americas, 2002

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Backrest of a Litter" dating back to the years 900-1470. Crafted by an unknown artist, this rare and dramatic object served as the essential support for a litter carried by human porters. Reserved exclusively for esteemed members of societies lacking draft animals or wheeled vehicles, litters were a prestigious mode of transportation. The backrest features striking and simplistic figures, possibly depicting a Chimu lord accompanied by four officials. Adorned in wide collars, tunics, and crescent headdresses embellished with either vibrant paint or corroded sheet metal that was once golden, these figures exude an air of authority and grandeur. Noteworthy are the holes located at the bottom of the backrest which likely functioned as lashing points for a beam supporting the seat of the litter. This ingenious design ensured stability during transport while maintaining comfort for its distinguished occupant. Expertly curated by Susan E. Bergh, PhD, Associate Curator specializing in Art of Ancient Americas in 2002 at The Cleveland Museum of Art; this remarkable piece represents heritage art from the Late Intermediate Period belonging to the Chimu people residing in Central Andes on North Coast. Heritage Images proudly presents this stunning photograph print capturing every intricate detail - from its gold alloy composition to mixed media elements such as wood, pigment, and shell inlay. Immerse yourself in history through this extraordinary sculpture that encapsulates both artistic brilliance and cultural significance.
