Beauty and the Beast, 1885. Artist: Joseph Swain
Beauty and the Beast, 1885. The Russian Bear is seen making up to Beauty, alias the Liberal Prime Minister, Mr Gladstone. Recently, Russia had been seen advancing upon the Afghan holding of Penjdeh. However, in mid-March 1885, Mr Gladstone announced that successful negotiations had been held between Russia and Britain with the Russians promising not to advance further and the English agreeing not to support the advance of Afghan troops. On the following day, though, Russia qualified its part of the agreement by adding the proviso that Afghanistan should not advance, attack or cause any disturbance in Penjdeh. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 28, 1885

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Beauty and the Beast, 1885" by Joseph Swain depicts a powerful allegorical figure in the form of a Russian bear making advances towards Beauty, symbolizing the Liberal Prime Minister Mr. Gladstone. The context behind this artwork lies in the political landscape of that time. In 1885, tensions were high between Russia and Britain due to Russia's advancements into Afghanistan's Penjdeh region. However, negotiations led by Mr. Gladstone resulted in an agreement where both parties made concessions: Russia promised not to advance further while England agreed not to support Afghan troops' advancement. The day after this announcement was made, Russia added a condition stating that Afghanistan should refrain from any aggression or disturbance in Penjdeh. This cartoon from Punch magazine brilliantly captures this delicate diplomatic situation through satire and caricature. Joseph Swain's engraving skillfully portrays the Russian bear as a dominant force seeking favor with Beauty (Mr. Gladstone). The monochrome black-and-white aesthetic adds depth and intensity to the image. This historical print serves as a reminder of the complex foreign affairs during the 19th century and highlights William Ewart Gladstone's role as a statesman navigating international alliances. It is an invaluable heritage image that offers insight into politics, diplomacy, and power dynamics of that era.
