EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment during the Bolshevik Coup in Russia, also known as the October Revolution, on the night of 7th to 8th November 1917 in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg). In this image, a group of officer cadets, defenders of the Kerensky government, are shown in the halls of the Winter Palace, awaiting the assault of the Maximalists. Their apprehensive expressions and tense postures convey the gravity of the situation. The architectural features of the palace, including the ornate chandelier and intricate ceiling, serve as a stark contrast to the impending chaos. Alexander Kerensky, the leader of the Provisional Government, had failed to quell the growing unrest in the city, and the Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, seized the opportunity to seize power. The cadets, armed and ready, were unable to prevent the takeover, and every last one of them was either killed or taken prisoner. This photograph is from "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" published by L'Illustration, a French magazine, in 1924. The image provides a glimpse into the historic events of the time, offering a unique perspective on the political upheaval that would forever change the course of Russian history.
