EDITORS COMMENTS
Calcutta Cathedral, 1876: A Glimpse into the Past This evocative black and white sketch, captured by one of our special artists for the Illustrated London News in 1876, transports us back in time to the majestic Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Calcutta, India. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, attended a service here on Christmas Day of that year. The Cathedral, a noble edifice of brick coated with chunam, resembling polished white marble, stands proudly against the backdrop of the bustling city of Calcutta (now Kolkata). Its tower and spire mirror those of Norwich Cathedral in England, reflecting the architectural influence of the Gothic and Neo-Gothic revival styles prevalent during the Victorian era. Constructed over three decades prior, at a cost of £50,000, the Cathedral owes much to the relentless efforts of the late Bishop Daniel Wilson. A testament to British imperialism and the spread of Christianity in the Indian subcontinent during the British Raj, this architectural marvel was a symbol of the power and influence of the British Empire. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, graced the Cathedral with his presence, adding another chapter to its rich history. The sketch, an engraving from the Illustrated London News, offers a unique perspective of this grand edifice, inviting us to explore the intersection of religion, imperialism, and architecture during the 19th century.
