The Canterbury Colonists - scene at Gravesend, on Monday, 1850. Creator: Unknown

The Canterbury Colonists - scene at Gravesend [in Kent], on Monday, 1850. Settlers bound for New Zealand. A dinner was given...in the fields adjoining Wate's Hotel...the hotel itself not being able to accommodate so large a party...a regular fair appearing to have sprung up on the spur of the moment...this first squadron for the new colony consists of four vessels, the Sir George Seymour, the Cressy, the Charlotte Jane, and the Randolph, which will convey about 600 passengers out to their new homes'. The settlement was to be peopled...by those who are of one faith - members of the English Church - and who are to begin by building schools and erecting places of worship, and thus providing for the intellectual and spiritual wants of the community...None who are really poor and wretched accompany them; such as go out as servants and labourers are men and women of good character...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the scene at Gravesend, Kent, on a Monday in 1850, as The Canterbury Colonists prepared to embark on their journey to New Zealand. The photograph, taken from an unknown creator, shows a large group of settlers gathered in the fields adjacent to Wate's Hotel, where a dinner was held to bid farewell to the first squadron of colonists. The hotel itself was unable to accommodate such a large party, resulting in a makeshift fair-like atmosphere. Four vessels, the Sir George Seymour, the Cressy, the Charlotte Jane, and the Randolph, were to transport approximately 600 passengers to their new homes in the new colony. The settlement was unique in that it was to be populated solely by members of the English Church, who intended to begin by constructing schools and places of worship to cater to the intellectual and spiritual needs of the community. It is important to note that only those of good character were among the settlers, with none of the truly poor and wretched accompanying them as servants or laborers. This photograph offers a glimpse into the excitement and anticipation of a new beginning for these colonists, as they set sail towards an uncertain future in a land far away.
