This exquisite porcelain censer, or incense burner, in the form of a mythical Qilin, or unicorn, dates from the Ming Dynasty, between 1573 and 1620. The creator of this masterpiece remains unknown, but it is believed to have been produced in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, China, during the Wanli period. The censer is a stunning example of Chinese ceramic art from the late Ming and early Qing periods. It is molded in porcelain with underglaze blue and overglaze painted enamel decoration in the wucai technique. The Qilin, a mythical beast from Chinese mythology, is depicted in a graceful and elegant pose, with a single horn on its forehead and the body of a deer, the hooves of a horse, and the scales of a fish. This censer was likely used in Chinese homes and temples for religious or ceremonial purposes, as incense was an essential component of Chinese culture and spiritual practices.
