EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from a sketch by a special artist for the Illustrated London News in 1876, depicts the Christmas-Day Service held in Calcutta Cathedral, graced by the presence of the Prince of Wales, who would later become King Edward VII of Great Britain and Ireland. The interior of the cathedral is adorned with the congregation in attendance, with Bishop Milman delivering his sermon from the pulpit. The Viceroy of India, Lord Northbrook, and the Prince of Wales are seated in the pew directly under the pulpit, accompanied by the Hon. Miss Baring, the Viceroy's daughter. Near their pew stands the empty Bishop's throne. In the foreground, Christmas decorations are visible around the font. The scene reflects the blending of Eastern and Western cultures during the British Raj in India, with many natives present, all dressed in European attire. This engraving showcases the architectural grandeur of the Gothic Revival style of the cathedral and offers a glimpse into the colonial past of the British Empire in India.
